2030 tournament FAQ
How does the 48-team 2030 format work?
48 teams play in 12 groups of four. The top two in each group advance along with the 8 best third-place teams, forming a 32-team knockout round — 104 matches in all, the format introduced in 2026.
Who hosts in 2030?
Spain, Portugal, and Morocco are the tournament hosts, and Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay host centenary opening matches. All six qualify automatically, counting against their confederations' quotas.
How many teams qualify from each confederation?
The working allocation carries the 2026 numbers forward: Europe 16, Africa 9, Asia 8, South America 6, North/Central America 6, Oceania 1, plus 2 inter-confederation playoff berths. Final 2030 quotas are confirmed after the 2026 tournament.
What are the group draw rules?
Outside Europe, no group can contain two teams from the same confederation. Europe is the exception: every group must include at least one and no more than two European teams — the procedure confirmed for the 2026 draw.
When is the 2030 draw?
The official draw is expected in December 2029, following the pattern of recent tournaments. Qualifying runs across 2028–29, with the first non-host qualifiers likely clinching in early 2029.
