Russia's World Cup History

The record splits in two, and reading it requires knowing where the seam is. FIFA recognizes Russia as the successor to the Soviet Union, so the inherited ledger comes first: seven Soviet appearances between 1958 and 1990 — the USSR missed only the 1974 and 1978 tournaments in that span — with a best finish of fourth in 1966, when a semifinal was lost 2-1 to West Germany. As Russia, there have been four appearances. The 1994 debut brought a group-stage exit that included a 6-1 win over Cameroon; 2002 brought another, a 2-0 win over Tunisia followed by defeats to Japan and Belgium; 2014 a third, on two draws and a loss.
