The summit came in the 1970s and early 80s, and it came twice. In 1974, Poland won third place by beating Brazil 1-0 — Grzegorz Lato's seventh goal of the tournament, enough for the Golden Boot — having lost only once all tournament: 0-1 to the hosts and eventual champions West Germany in the deciding match of the second group stage.
