Costa Rica's Road to 2030: World Cup Qualifying Status and History

Costa Rica have not qualified for the 2030 World Cup — no team has beyond the six hosts — but their road has real dates on it: CONCACAF's qualifying opens in September 2027, and Costa Rica will be in it after missing a World Cup for only the second time since their debut. Has Costa Rica Qualified for the 2030 World Cup?

No — and no team can have yet. The only qualified teams are the six hosts (Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay, all automatic), and every other place on the qualified-teams tracker waits on qualifying that, for most confederations, hasn't been scheduled. CONCACAF is the exception, and Costa Rica enter its announced road coming off the campaign that kept them out of 2026.

How Does Costa Rica Qualify for 2030?

Through CONCACAF — and unlike almost every other country in this series, the answer comes with real dates. CONCACAF is the only confederation with a confirmed 2030 format and calendar, announced February 6, 2026. Qualifying opens in September 2027 with home-and-away ties among teams ranked 14th–35th in the confederation; the eleven winners join the top thirteen seeds in six groups of four, played through March 2028; the group survivors reach a twelve-team final round — three groups of four, from June 2028 through October 2029 — where the top two in each group qualify. The three third-place teams get one more chance: a play-in in November 2029 whose winner advances to the FIFA intercontinental playoffs. CONCACAF has said it expects six direct places plus that playoff route, pending FIFA's quota confirmation. Where Costa Rica enter depends on their confederation ranking when the draw is made. Costa Rica's World Cup History

The history has two summits. The first was the debut itself: at Italia '90, Costa Rica beat Scotland 1-0 in their first-ever World Cup match, added a win over Sweden, and advanced from the group at the first attempt before Czechoslovakia ended the run 4-1 in the round of 16.

The second is 2014, and it belongs to a small family of World Cup records this series keeps meeting. Drawn into a group with three former champions — Uruguay, Italy, and England — Costa Rica won it: 3-1 over Uruguay from a goal down, 1-0 over Italy, 0-0 with England. In the round of 16 they held Greece 1-1 through extra time with ten men — Óscar Duarte sent off on a second yellow — and advanced 5-3 on penalties, Keylor Navas saving twice in the shootout. The quarterfinal against the Netherlands finished 0-0, and the shootout went 4-3 the other way. Because shootout results are officially recorded as draws, Costa Rica's 2014 World Cup reads: five matches, two wins, three draws, no defeats — eliminated anyway. The Netherlands, who ended that run, went on to build the same paradox at career scale — a record unbeaten streak bracketed by shootout exits — and New Zealand's 2010 is the pattern's purest case: three draws, straight home.

Around the summits, quieter tournaments: group stages in 2002 (a win over China, a draw with Turkey, a defeat to Brazil), 2006, 2018, and 2022, with the 2010 tournament missed entirely.

Why Wasn't Costa Rica at the 2026 World Cup?

Because the group ran against them. Drawn with Haiti, Honduras, and Nicaragua in CONCACAF's final qualifying round, Costa Rica finished third on seven points — one win, four draws, and a defeat — behind Haiti, who won the group and went to the World Cup. The end came at home: a 0-0 draw with Honduras at the Estadio Nacional in San José on November 18, 2025, that eliminated both teams at once. It was Costa Rica's second miss since the 1990 debut, after 2010.

When Does Costa Rica Start Qualifying?

September 2027 — the one confederation where the answer is a date.
