Chile's Road to 2030: World Cup Qualifying Status and History — artwork

Chile have not qualified for the 2030 World Cup — no team beyond the six hosts has, and CONMEBOL hasn't announced its 2030 format or calendar. Chile's record holds a particular pairing: both of the country's football summits came at home — third place at the 1962 World Cup they hosted, and the 2015 Copa América title won in Santiago — while the road away from home keeps closing. The generation that won two straight continental titles never passed a World Cup round of 16, and Chile have now missed three straight World Cups, the last with two wins from eighteen qualifiers. Here's where their road stands, and the history behind the shape.

Has Chile Qualified for the 2030 World Cup?

No — and no team can have yet. The only qualified teams are the six hosts (Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay, all automatic), and every other place on the qualified-teams tracker waits on continental qualifying that hasn't begun anywhere. Chile's last appearance remains 2014 — twelve years and three missed tournaments ago by the time 2030 kicks off, unless the next campaign changes it.

How Does Chile Qualify for 2030?

Through CONMEBOL — which has not announced its 2030 format or calendar. The confederation has ten members, three of which — Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay — are already qualified as hosts, leaving seven competing for whatever places the confederation receives. Historically, South America has played a single all-play-all league over years of match windows, but nothing about 2030 is confirmed, including whether the host berths come out of CONMEBOL's quota or sit on top of it. The format's difficulty is the standing fact of Chilean qualifying: every member plays every other twice, home and away, against a pool that includes Brazil and Argentina every single time. How every confederation's road works is its own explainer; this page updates when CONMEBOL's details land.

Chile's World Cup History

The summit came at home. Hosting the 1962 World Cup, Chile finished third — still the best result in their history, at the tournament Brazil won. Around it sit the early-era appearances: 1930, at the first World Cup, then 1950, 1966, 1974, and 1982, all ending in the group stage.

Then the interruption. On September 3, 1989, in a qualifier at the Maracanã with Chile trailing Brazil, a flare thrown from the stands landed near goalkeeper Roberto Rojas, who cut himself with a razor blade concealed in his glove and feigned injury; Chile left the field and did not finish the match. FIFA awarded Brazil the game, ending Chile's 1990 qualifying campaign, banned Chile from qualifying for the 1994 World Cup, and banned Rojas for life — a ban lifted in 2001.

The modern era returned Chile to the tournament three times — 1998, 2010, and 2014 — and all three ended at the same stage: the round of 16, the last of them to Brazil on penalties. That 2014 team sat at the center of the generation that won back-to-back Copas América — 2015 in Santiago and the 2016 Centenario, both finals against Argentina — without ever passing a World Cup round of 16. Since 2014, no World Cups at all: misses in 2018, 2022, and 2026. Two continental titles and a last-place qualifying table within a decade of each other is the record's starkest pairing, and the eighteen-match road above is the arithmetic both happened on.

Year Result
1930 Group stage
1950 Group stage
1962 (hosts) Third place
1966 Group stage
1974 Group stage
1982 Group stage

2010 Round of 16
2014 Round of 16

Chile missed the tournaments of 1934, 1938, 1954, 1958, 1970, 1978, and 1986; the 1990 campaign ended by forfeit and the 1994 ban followed; and they have missed 2002, 2006, 2018, 2022, and 2026 through qualifying.

Why Wasn't Chile at the 2026 World Cup?

Because the campaign collapsed entirely. Chile finished last in South America's ten-team table — tenth of ten, two wins from eighteen matches — a third consecutive World Cup missed. The 2-0 defeat in Bolivia in June 2025 stands as the campaign's marker: the team that finished seventh and reached the intercontinental playoff final beat the two-time continental champions on the way. A qualifying road that never rotates the giants out offers no soft cycles, and Chile's next attempt at it begins whenever CONMEBOL publishes the 2030 format.

When Does Chile Start Qualifying?

No one knows yet — CONMEBOL hasn't published a format or calendar. The markers to watch: the confederation's 2030 announcement, FIFA's quota confirmation (including whether the three South American host berths come out of CONMEBOL's total), then the schedule itself. The tracker will carry Chile's status the day it changes, and Chile's team page follows their road all cycle. Until the real table exists, run the question the last decade keeps asking — what does a return look like? — by putting Chile in a 2030 bracket in the Tournament Builder.
