The Saints Are Quietly 17–5 on Sunday Night Football Since 2002 — the Best Win Rate Nobody Talks About

Since 2002, the New Orleans Saints are 17–5 on Sunday Night Football — a .773 win rate, the best in the league among teams with 15 or more appearances. Green Bay is a distant second at .635. And yet New Orleans ranks just 17th of 32 in Sunday night appearances, with 22 games in 24 seasons.

That combination — first in winning, seventeenth in invitations — is the strangest gap between performance and primetime in the modern schedule. Here's what's inside it.

The record, and how far ahead it is

The answer first: 17–5, .773, and it isn't close. The full table of Sunday night win rates (minimum 15 appearances) puts the Saints nearly 140 points of win percentage clear of second place:

The wins aren't narrow, either. The Saints average 29.8 points in their Sunday night games while allowing 20.3, and they've held opponents to seven points or fewer four separate times — including the 62–7 evisceration of the Colts in 2011, the largest Sunday night margin in franchise history and the Saints' highest-scoring game of the era in any window.

A record that travels

Home dominance would be the easy explanation, and the Superdome at night is genuinely one of the sport's hostile environments — the Saints are 11–3 there on Sunday nights. But the road record is 6–2, nearly the same rate. The list of road victims includes a 42–17 dismantling of Dallas (2006), a 30–20 win at Minnesota (2018), and the game that currently ends the whole ledger: a 9–0 shutout at Tampa Bay on December 19, 2021, against the defending Super Bowl champions.

They also own the window against the team that owns the window everywhere else. Dallas leads the league with 64 Sunday night appearances since 2002; against New Orleans on Sunday night, the Cowboys are 1–4 — including the 2019 game the Saints won 12–10 without scoring a touchdown.

The five losses, for the record

An honest ledger prints its debits: 55–21 to Peyton Manning's Colts in 2003 (the win-rate's one true humiliation), 38–31 to Minnesota in 2004, 34–14 to Denver in 2012, 38–17 at Dallas in 2014, and 37–30 to Green Bay in 2020. Two of the five came in the pre-Payton era; since 2010 the record is 12–3.

Seventeenth in invitations

Now the part that makes the title true. Twenty-two appearances in 24 seasons is below the league average of 25 — fewer Sunday nights than Indianapolis, Chicago, or the Giants, who have lost more SNF games (26) than the Saints have played.

The gaps are the striking part. New Orleans had zero Sunday night games in 2008 and 2009 — the exact seasons the franchise was building to and winning a Super Bowl. Zero again in 2016 and 2017, in the heart of Drew Brees's late prime. And zero every season since 2022. The best Sunday night team of the era has not been on Sunday night in four years, and its last act in the window was shutting out the defending champions on the road.

The longer record says this isn't a small-sample trick, either. Extending through the original Sunday night package back to 1987 — broadcast-history-derived, matched game by game — the Saints are 24–14 (.632) across 38 all-era appearances. The window has simply always agreed with them.

Why the schedule works this way

Sunday night slots aren't assigned on merit — they're assigned on projected audience, months before a down is played, with flex scheduling as the in-season correction. A market's size, a team's national following, and last season's storylines drive the May decisions far more than any team's actual record in the window. Nobody in the scheduling room is checking who wins Sunday night games, which is how a .773 team ends up seventeenth in invitations while a sub-.400 team keeps headlining.
